City Nord Park
The City Nord Park constitutes another essential part of the overall concept. The layout was designed to endorse and represent the independence of the architecture. In 1968 the competition to develop the landscaping was won by Günther Schulze. He planned large water features along the City Nord Centre but had to abandon the idea due to increasing financial cut-backs caused by the oil crisis in the 1970s. He subsequently presented new plans in 1975 that cost only one third of previous estimates with no water features whatsoever. The distinguishing features of this proposal were blocks, rows and avenues of Plane–trees in 7 and 14 metre grids. The only exception to this linear design was the central area of the ring enclosure. Here, maple trees were randomly planted.
Park Maintenance through Private/Public Partnership
There has been a successful partnership between the GIG and the horticultural department of the district authority of Hamburg-Nord since 2002. An annual grant from GIG provides for special upkeep of the Jahnring verges. Overgrown greenery is a thing of the past. Despite this, it has still been necessary to improve the visual impression of the parkland. A proposal was put forward by an interested group and accepted at the district conference to change from long to short grass maintenance, resulting in the increased use of the recreational areas
