Welcome to City Nord, Hamburg
At the end of the 1950’s, the idea for an office city was developed by the then city building commissioner for Hamburg, Werner Hebebrand. The ambitious plan, to offer attractive locations close to the city centre as the head quarters of major companies, was at that time one of the biggest and most challenging government building projects in Europe.
Similar to Central Park in New York, the offices of large corporations were to be located outside the city centre, yet still in a central position. The attractive location of land north of Hamburg’s city park only a few kilometeres from the city centre and in close proximity to Fuhlsbüttler airport, seemed custom-made for the new office estate. The goal of the project was to halt the expansion and concentration of firms in both the city centre and the residential areas of Rotherbaum/Harvestehude, Uhlenhorst and Palmaille. And that is exactly what the business location City Nord succeeded in doing.
City Nord has, with its characteristics – quality, free standing office buildings in concise open space configurations, generous street planning, effective separation of street and pedestrian traffic levels – developed into a striking and distinct trademark of Hamburg’s cityscape. Today finds City Nord with around 300 firms employing about 28,000 people.
